relics of disquiet, [Feb. 24th, 2009|05:50 pm]
One day a week I volunteer at the Rochester museum and science center. Primarily what I have been doing the last couple of months is taking photographs of acquisition items that are going to be stored.
This has given me the opportunity to see some weird stuff from a veterans disturbing collection of Nazi memorabilia to assorted collections of bottles from a Rochester factory.
Today i found something that took the cake. I was photographing a collection of assorted WW1 Photographs, cavalrymen jumping over fences, fort sports teams, mess halls, enrollment papers, and then on the bottom of the stack of photographs, mounted on battered brown cardboard, there it was.

The picture was from the outcome from the battle of Bud Dajo in the Filipino Insurrection, There is an article about it with another copy of the same photograph from the national archives here, http://www.boston.com/news/globe/ideas/articles/2006/03/12/what_happened_at_bud_dajo/

Grab the nearest book.
* Open the book to page 56.
* Find the fifth sentence.
* Post the text of the next two to five sentences in your journal along with these instructions.
* Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

the closest closest closest book is Confederates in the attic by Tony Horwitz, and follows thusly

" Hair. Bits of wood. Blood Stained clothing. The Kindergarten was beginning to feel less like a museum then a saints reliquary. "

and because it was almost as close, and cause i am a meme rule breaker, thats just how i roll, page 56 from the dark side of the moon, a collection of short stories by Alfred Bester

" I
must

not

jump; no, not even to jump better. I Have no control over self, speech, love, fate, I must compensate always
But I try anyway.

it is stuff like this that makes the history enthusiast in me weep. [May. 31st, 2008|09:27 pm]
So today at the place of my employment I was approached by one of my managers. He asked me "Hey? Do you know what June 6th is?"

"Of course," I replied " It is the the 64th anniversary of D-day."

"Really?" he Replied "I was just going to remind you that it is Our eat well live well rally where we are all going to pledge to live better healthier lives."

Because as everyone knows, a corporate healthy living program is more important then the anniversary of the Normandy invasion which signaled the beginning of the end of the Nazi Scourge.

I guess i just dont make a good little cooperate drone.

there must be some kind of way outta here said the joker to the theif [May. 28th, 2008|04:01 pm]
sick and diggin,
bought a weeping cherry tree a couple of weeks ago at the Lowe's, it was three bucks and marked down cause it resembled nothing more then a stick with some leafy bits on the top. for three bucks could I loose? so in the pasty week i started digging up a large hump of dirt that has been in the backyard ever since we moved here some 20 years ago. Why is it there? Dammed if i know but if you hear me screaming like a little girl, its because there was a body under there. However if there is a body then all kinds of forensic people would come and dig my hole for me ...sweet.

so i dug a hole and plopped my stick in the ground. we will see if it lives. Now i have a big dirt circle in the middle of the hill with a stick in the middle, what to do with it next, I dunno?

anyway, the first four episodes of the new season of Battlestar Galactica should have just finished converting so i think i am going to go and kill 4 hours watching.

I cannot hold my peace any more [May. 14th, 2008|11:20 am]
like i ever did...

I just have to say it, The Hobbit in 2 movies. Really?
I say this because i just finished re reading the Hobbit, and if any book cries out for single movie treatment it is the hobbit. but we will be getting 2, from the people who brought us pointless wolf attacks and cowardly Theodan and screwed up understanding of elven immortality. But lets not rant on my own thoughts of the weakness of the two towers.

But the second movie is going to cover all that stuff that happens between the hobbit anf the Lord of the Rings, the inter testemental period if you will.

really?
All that stuff?

* 2951 - Estel, later known as Aragorn, comes of age and is told about his heritage; the Corsairs of Umbar officially ally themselves with Mordor and destroy great monument commemorating Ar-Pharazôn's victory over Sauron
* 2953 - Last meeting of the White Council.
* 2956 - Aragorn first meets Gandalf the Grey
* 2957-2980 - Aragorn as Thorongil serves in the armies of King Thengel of Rohan, and Steward Ecthelion II of Gondor
* 2980 - Arwen pledges her hand in marriage to Aragorn; Frodo Baggins loses both of his parents in a boating accident; Aragorn, in the service of the Steward of Gondor Ecthelion II leads a taskforce south and kills the Captain of the Haven, ruler of Umbar; Samwise Gamgee born;[14] Théoden, son of Thengel, becomes seventeenth king of Rohan after the death of his father.
* 2989 - Frodo Baggins comes under the guardianship of Bilbo Baggins; a company of Dwarves, led by Balin, try to recolonize Moria
* 2994 - Balin is killed; the dwarf-colony in Moria is destroyed
* 3001 - Bilbo Baggins turns 111, passes the One Ring on to Frodo Baggins, and leaves the Shire. From now on Aragorn and Gandalf intermittently hunt Gollum

So I edited out all the births and deaths, pretty much Aragorn comes of age and goes off to fight, and Balin returns to Moria, And Aragorn hunts gollum, but that really hapens during the time covered in the lord of the rings. Nothing that is not pretty sufficiently covered in the movie/ books.I could conceivably see the battle between the white council and the Necromancer pushed into here, but that is neither here nor there.

So at what point does this become overblown fan fic. well financed fan fic but fan fic none the less, and where does it end.

Does the New shadow, Tolkien's abandoned sequel to the lo9rd of the rings get made, with the argument, yes well tolkien wrote a few pages before he abandoned it, so we can see his intent and we merely completed it.

Or does someone try to mine the Silimirillian, well probally not, because i think the tolkien family still holdes the rights to that.

The cinimatic lord of the rings walked a fine line between translation and desecration, and for the most part stayed on the translation side of the line, But when you come to the point that you are creating story whole cloth where nothing more then a scketchey outline exists, that would be desecration.

[music |some guy playing "Habanera" on Gutiar]

we must weigh the, well weighty weight bearing matter of upon who's shoulders we should cast the weight of the presidency,

but wait there is more,

I have to this point been completly undecided as to who i should endorse. It is an important decision that might effect all of 2 or three people.

I was thrown a rope of hope when i came upon this web sight. http://www.walken2008.com. Alas and woe, the rope of hope became a laughing snake of mockery when i discovered it was only a hoax.

However, my friends perhaps we have an answer,

No country for old men [Mar. 18th, 2008|06:55 pm]
Wow,...
It is almost 24 hours since i watched it and Its still with me, It is so stark and dark and at the same time serenely horrid, that i wish i didn't send it back to netflicks so i can watch it again. I read somewhere that Ridly Scott is doing Blood Meridian, another book by cormac Mcarthy that mirrors the themes of No country for Old Men, Good luck Ridly, you are not going to be able to do better then this, all you will make is a pale imitation.
